Tremezzo

The town is situated on the western side of the Lario, in front of Bellagio, sightseeing on the central part of the lake; Tremezzo has been a famous place of holiday in all the times and this is the reason why in the town there is a huge presence of villas, magnificent and sumptuous both in the architecture and in the parks. The imposing villas and the great hotels, risen from the 1700's and the 1800's along the shores of the lake, make since a long time Tremezzo a center of international tourism.
Perhaps the most famous villa of Tremezzo (and maybe of whole lake Como) is Villa Carlotta; it was built, as estate property, around 1690 by the marquis Giorgio Clerici, and, through several owners, it was brought in 1843 by the princess Marianna of Nassau, who gave it to her daughter Carlotta (the name comes from her), in occasion of the wedding with the Duke George of Saxony-Meiningen.
Inside the villa there is a museum of neoclassic art: marbles of Antonio Canova and Berthel Thorvaldsen, precious canvas and frescoes, and the original furnitures from the 19th century can be admired; but the most important part is probably the park where, thanks to the exceptional climate of this part of the lake, a botanical patrimony that exceeds the 500 species can be enjoyed. Among the plants of great interest there is a giant sequoia, the tree of cork, that one of camphor, then papyruses and banana trees. It is always admired the arbour of the citruses: oranges, tangerins, grapefruits, cedars, lemons and bergamots.
